#PL113 - Large Silent Majority Button from the Nixon Era Vintage unused 1 3/4" Silent Majority button. These were made right after Richard Nixon's famous "Silent Majority" speech on November 3, 1969 when he addressed the nation and said "And so tonight -- to you, the great silent majority of my fellow Americans -- I ask for your support." The topic he was speaking on was Vietnam. The speech sounds hauntingly like the Iraq situation today. Here is an excerpt from it "But the question facing us today is: Now that we are in the war, what is the best way to end it? In January I could only conclude that the precipitate withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam would be a disaster not only for South Vietnam but for the United States and for the cause of peace. For the South Vietnamese, our precipitate withdrawal would inevitably allow the Communists to repeat the massacres which followed their takeover in the North 15 years before; They then murdered more than 50,000 people and hundreds of thousands more died in slave labor camps." In the end, the withdrawal happened and the long term consequences were not as dire as anyone had thought they would be. Hmm........ $1.50
