#PL112 - Wallace Lemay Campaign Buttons Vintage 1" diameter unused buttons from the 1968 presidential campaign. You don't often find Wallace buttons with his running mate Lemay's name on them. Wallace ran with Lemay in 1968 when they received 13.5 percent of the popular vote, which was more than any other third party candidate had ever gotten in the United States. They carried 5 states for a total of 46 electoral votes. Lemay was one of the reasons they didn't do even better as in 1962 (he was a general at that time), he had clashed with President John F. Kennedy and Defense Secretary McNamara, arguing that he should be allowed to bomb nuclear missile sites in Cuba. When running for vice president in 1968 LeMay opined that he, unlike many Americans, clearly did not fear using nuclear weapons. This did not go over well with the American public. $1.50
