#ZBOT050 - Universal Bitter Wine Label Vintage 5 1/2" tall Bitter Wine label. It says that "Universal Bitter Wine is a laxative tonic". These were found a number of years ago at the now demolished site of the Universal Chemical Company in Chicago, Illinois. Dated 1920. Universal was a late maker of bitters. Bitters and Bitter Wine were popular around the turn of the century because it was basically alcohol that could not be taxed because they called it a medicine. They pure food and drug act of 1906 put an end to all of that, but a few manufacturers continued making the product for various medical purposes. These are beautiful large labels in excellent condition. They have a little curl, but will straighten right out if framed or put on a bottle. The stickum is still good on the back.
