This catalog is dedicated to the memory of Zane Shaffer. He was a pioneer in this field who recently left us. A lot of you have likely crossed paths with him. He was, arguably, the largest dealer in our type of merchandise on the East Coast. His family sold us a large lot of his inventory with the hope that his items will find good homes with people who appreciate them. You will see a lot of them over the next year or so, and we will mark them as such. Here is a note from his family "Whether he was gettin' his road warrior on traveling to antique markets in places like Shupp's Grove or buying/selling online, he enjoyed every minute of it. He held a very special place in his heart for the people, the places, and 'the old things'. It's really good to know that his collection will reach all the folks that had the same passion about them. We truly hope you enjoy them as much as he did."

#BEADS0018 - Group of 12 White Base 5-6mm Round Glass Picasso Beads
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. You will get 12 for $1.00 (that's about 8¢ each). Vintage 5-6mm diameter white base picasso beads. Picasso beads were made by a special technique and have an unusual look. They were pressed into shapes, then fire polished by subjecting them to extreme heat for a short time to just melt the outer layer and give it a polished look. Then, they were coated with gases from various metals to get the look. These came from a long closed warehouse. These are older ones. Circa 1950. Uncommon. Excellent unused condition.

#BEADS0156 - Group of 12 Early Plastic Aqua, Oxblood, and White Beads with a Speckled Pattern
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. You will get 12 for $1.00 (that's around 8¢ each). Vintage hard plastic beads with a beautiful aqua, oxblood, and white speckled pattern that are 11-12mm in diameter. This is an early style of plastic that was made around 1950 or possibly earlier.

They are in unused condition, and like most of the others in this find, so far as we can tell, there are no other examples of these to be found anywhere online, or anywhere else period. These were the only plastic beads stashed away with the hippie beads, but are substantially older.
$1.00

#BEADS0172 - Group of 4 Lavender 17mm Japanese Ceramic Powder Big Hole Beads
Click the picture to see larger more detailed image. You will get 4 for $1 (that's 25¢ each). Vintage lavender colored 17mm long big hole ceramic powder coated beads. These were in boxes marked "Made in Japan" and are from the late 1960s.

Hippies were stringing big hole beads on rope back in the day and these had the earthy look that was popular. They are in unused condition, and are very uncommon. They were sold as hippie beads in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area. In 1967, the hippie phenomena dominated the area and the demand for beads was huge. The owner of this store put out the call that he wanted all types of beads that were either colorful, large, earthenware, or had mystical significance. The hardcore hippies wanted glass or ceramic or earthenware, so that is what most of these items are. The demand started slacking as the hippie phenomena died down and by the mid 1970s, they started selling gold chains and disco related items instead. The hippie items were taken from the front shelves, and stored in the back. The newspaper they were wrapped in was dated 1977, so that's when they put them back there. The most striking thing in the store was an old display of huge African Trade Bead necklaces from the 1800s. They were even selling those sort of beads to the hippies. One of those necklaces will run you about 2 grand now. That place is a real time warp. You could still smell incense around some of the boxes and I kept hearing Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in my head. Just amazing.
