#BEADS0179 - Large Handmade Terra Cotta Indonesian Trade Bead/Pendant from the Hippie Store - Flat Square
Vintage flat square 1 3/8" tall by 7/8" thick terra cotta Indonesian Trade bead. Sizes vary a bit, and the holes are about 3/8" across. These were hand made and no two are alike. All have incised decoration. Some of the original paperwork was with these. They were made in the Philippines originally and sold in Indonesia. This group went from the Philippines to California. The documentation is all pre zip code, so they are likely from around 1960 or earlier. The store in California we got all this stuff from, grabbed a bunch to sell to the hippies along with African Trade beads. The hippies wore them as beads and pendants. Terra Cotta is very delicate. The fact that they survived at all is amazing. They were never used, although most will have some imperfections or small nicks. Part of that is the way they were made and part of their charm. Unglazed terracotta beads this old are hard to find.

These were sold in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area.
