#ZZA134 - Groups of 20 Napkin Dispenser Fortune/Drink Cards with Fortune or Drinks
You get 20 for $1.00 (that's only 5¢ each). Vintage 2 1/4" wide cards with pull strips. The front either tells you your fortune or a tidbit of wisdom about you or a drink recipe. You pulled back the tab and depending on how many stars were under there you won something. These are unused stock that were made for napkin machines that sat on a table usually in a bar. You put a penny or nickel in and got your fortune or a drink recipe and a chance to win a discount or a drink depending on what the house paid. These are from around the 1950s and are in excellent unused condition. The idea for the bar was that if someone got a card with a drink recipe on it, they might order the drink and the bar would make more money. If they got three stars, maybe they won a 5¢ discount on a drink, so they might order and the bar would again make more money. Plus the bar got a penny or nickel when someone put their money in the machine. Pretty clever marketing devices. You will get bunch of different ones in the lot of 20.

#ZZA207 - Two Different Pacific Ocean Park 1¢ Arcade John Wayne Cards
You get the pair for $3. (That's $1.50 each). These are very rare Ocean Park Penny Arcade 4 in 1 cards featuring John Wayne with a signature. These are different from the other one we have offered elsewhere in this catalog. Excellent unused condition. One card has John Wayne, Buck Jones, Don Barry, and Allan Lane. The other one has John Wayne, Bob Livingston, Dick Foran, and Buddy Roosevelt.

Ocean Park was built in Santa Monica, CA in 1958 and closed in 1967. It was a very large park that was built to compete with Disneyland. However, city planners, in an effort to renew the area, demolished buildings and closed streets all around the park so people couldn't find there way in. Even though it was a huge park, it was forced to close it's doors and the contents were auctioned off in 1968. These cards are marked "Pacific Ocean Park Arcade 1¢" on the front and have a postcard back.

#TY915 - Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus Ad Proof Sheet for Newspaper Placement
Vintage 9" tall ad proof sheet for the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. The guy who ran ahead of the circus would distribute these to local newspapers. The newspapers used them as proof sheets to print the ad from. Clyde Beatty was a lion tamer who became so famous that he had his own syndicated radio series and appeared in 11 movies. He had his own circus which merged with the Cole Circus in 1956. These are from the late 1950s and the paper is a little brittle, but still in good shape.

These came from a fellow whose job it was to run ahead of the circus to prime the town they were going to. He would put up signs in yards in exchange for tickets. Give tickets to the local stores to sell, and take proofs to the local newspapers. He did this from about 1958 till 1962 for several circuses. This paper and a lot of other stuff we bought came from leftovers in his garage. The Cole Circus was one of the majors. It was equal to Ringling Brothers in the 1930s. When TV came around in the 1950s and 60s, many of these circuses had trouble. People got glued to the TV. The New Cole Brothers Circus was formed in the 1980s and it is still around today.
