#PL060 - Sock it to 'em Spiro Pinback
#PL060 - Sock it to 'em Spiro Pinback
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. Vintage 1 3/4" diameter pinback that says "Sock it to 'em Spiro". Excellent unused condition. These are interesting. They were made in 1968 by AAA novelty in Washington D.C. and are a reference to a 1968 cameo appearances of Richard Nixon on the Laugh In show which aired just before the general election. Richard Nixon deadpanned, "Sock it to me?" on the show. Many credit that appearance on Laugh-In as pushing Nixon over the top to get elected to the presidency. His opponent Hubert H. Humphrey declined the invitation. Spiro, of course, refers to Spiro Agnew, who was running with Nixon as his Vice President.

##MUSICGD2042 - Grateful Dead Car Window Tour Sticker/Decal - Many Dancing Bears Forming a Peace Sign
##MUSICGD2042 - Grateful Dead Car Window Tour Sticker/Decal - Many Dancing Bears Forming a Peace Sign
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. Vintage 5" square Grateful Dead sticker/decal. These are high quality art decals that were made for car windows. I peeled the cover off for the picture. They are in mint condition and can still be used. This one has a copyright date of 1990 on it. It features a lots of Grateful Dead bears dancing in circles to form a peace sign.

These Grateful Dead stickers/decals are old tour merchandise. I found them wrapped in plastic in boxes in master cases. They came from a distributor who sold them to tour vendors. The condition is pristine and they still will work as a car decal or window/mirror sticker. We found them packed away in storage boxes dated 1992 (many are older than that) and 1995 (year Jerry Garcia died). They are high quality artist renderings of Grateful Dead themes. Back in the day, the Dead did not monitor copyrights and that sort of thing, and in fact, at one point encouraged artists to do designs. The LA times explained it well “The Grateful Dead was famously lax in enforcing it’s intellectual property rights and trademarks, allowing fans to create their own designs using the band’s expansive iconography”. Since there was no serious monitoring or much concern back then, a lot of up and coming artists got involved in designing them. This is how some of them got their starts. Some of the sticker artists who designed these stickers went on to produce official licensed works for the Grateful Dead and other famous groups. These stickers include some by now famous designers including David Opie, and others. These older stickers are very hard to find anymore.

##MUSICBP0372 - Beach Boys Fasson Cloth Backstage Pass from the 1991 Surf Don't Surf Tour - Charles Manson
##MUSICBP0372 - Beach Boys Fasson Cloth Backstage Pass from the 1991 Surf Don't Surf Tour - Charles Manson
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image of both sides of the pass. Vintage 4 3/4" tall Fasson (manufacturer) cloth "Backstage" backstage pass from the 1991 Beach Boys Surf Don't Surf Tour.

"Don't Surf" is a reference that was used in reference to Charlie Manson. Charles Manson had a brief relationship with Beach Boy's drummer Dennis Wilson during the summer of 1968. The Manson family temporarily lived with him. A little known fact is that The Beach Boys even recorded a version of a song written by Charles Manson. "Don't Surf" was a popular logo on Manson T-shirts. Uncommon and in excellent unused condition. These came from the estate of the late Gary Nichamin. He worked for most of his career as the main photographer, graphics designer, and stage manager for the Beach Boys. He not only designed most of their passes, but also was in charge of issuing them at the concerts.

#TZCards145 - Complete Set of 32 Different Blind Date for Men Pinup Arcade Cards
#TZCards145 - Complete Set of 32 Different Blind Date for Men Pinup Arcade Cards
Complete set of 32 Exhibit Supply Blind Date for Men cards. Each one has a corny little story with 1940s humor many have what were considered risque poses for the time. The copyright date is 1941, which is the date the machines that dispensed these for a penny were originally made. The Exhibit Supply Company made them for the machines for years after.

We have a large lot of Exhibit Supply cards that we found in unopened bricks (you can see a picture of some of the bricks at the top of this department (Trading Card Shop). They are from a closed penny arcade. This is about the only way you would ever be able to find complete sets. The problem still is that there are more of some cards than others, so we can't assemble as many sets as you might think. These cards are uncommon. They are difficult to date because many of the machines were in production in the 1930s and 40s, but Exhibit Supply made cards for many of them all the way up to the early 1970s. The tale end stuff generally used lighter colored cardboard backing and printing on the bricks was stamped. The older ones have separate printed labels. So, we are using that info and the aging on the brick wrappers to estimate dates. The arcade must have bought the bricks of these during different time periods. Some are the lighter backs, but not the real light ones. We'll call it circa 1960.
