#UPaper006 - Frisco Railway Letterhead
Vintage 7" tall notepad sheets with brightly colored Frisco Railway letterhead. The Frisco is a defunct U.S. railroad that operated in the Midwest and South Central U.S. from 1876 to 1980. These are an interesting story. This summer we took a vacation in Branson, MO and heard stories of a fellow who had gotten lots of stuff out of the old Frisco Railway depot when in closed around 1980. We never did find the fellow, but one of the local antique dealers had this stack of letterhead that he got from the fellow we never found. It was in an old string tied bundle that looked pretty beat up, but much to our amazement the sheets were like new when we got down below the first three or four. I'm not sure of the exact date as from what I've been able to look up there were many types of Frisco trains, but I'm guessing from the style of the one in the picture that they are probably from the 1950s.

#BEADS0148 - Amazing Huge Glass Swirl Floral Pattern Hand Made Bead
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. Vintage nearly 1" wide (average) handmade bead. These are large heavy glass beads that have swirls forming a floral pattern in white and red against the black glass. Because they were handmade (also known as lampwork beads), no two are alike. The sizes are plus or minus a bit and the designs are unique on each one. They are in unused condition, and are some of the most beautiful pieces you will ever see. As far as we can tell, there are no other examples of these to be found anywhere online, or anywhere period. They came into the store in 1967, but are old stock that appear to be fancy Venetian floral beads from the early 1900s.

#BEADS0349 - Group of 4 Red Rose Design 18mm Japanese Ceramic Big Hole Beads
Click the picture to see larger more detailed image (two views pictured). You will get 4 for $1 (that's 25¢ each). Vintage red rose design (on two sides) 18mm long big hole ceramic beads. These were in boxes marked "Made in Japan" and are from the late 1960s.

Hippies were stringing big hole beads on rope back in the day and these had the earthy look that was popular. They are in unused condition, and are very uncommon. They were sold as hippie beads in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area. In 1967, the hippie phenomena dominated the area and the demand for beads was huge. The owner of this store put out the call that he wanted all types of beads that were either colorful, large, earthenware, or had mystical significance. The hardcore hippies wanted glass or ceramic or earthenware, so that is what most of these items are. The demand started slacking as the hippie phenomena died down and by the mid 1970s, they started selling gold chains and disco related items instead. The hippie items were taken from the front shelves, and stored in the back. The newspaper they were wrapped in was dated 1977, so that's when they put them back there. The most striking thing in the store was an old display of huge African Trade Bead necklaces from the 1800s. They were even selling those sort of beads to the hippies. One of those necklaces will run you about 2 grand now. That place is a real time warp. You could still smell incense around some of the boxes and I kept hearing Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in my head. Just amazing.

#BEADS0464 - Rare 16mm Deep Cobalt Glass Optimist International Intaglio - As low as $1 each
Vintage 16mm (.6") incised gold filled deep cobalt glass Optimist International intaglio. In our never ending quest to bring you the odd and unusual....  We couldn't find these anywhere else on the internet. It's a cool find. Flat gold foil back. These were hard to get a good picture of, but they are very high quality. West German. They are from around 1950. Pretty much never seen the light of day perfect condition.

Optimist International was formed in 1911 as a benevolent organization that helped their local communities and considered themselves to have a positive outlook in the face of all problems. It is one of the few of the old time fraternal organizations that has survived over the years. They are now heavily involved in modern issues such as Childhood cancer campaigns and even an internet safety program to ward off online predators. Older memorabilia like this is hard to find, and there are a lot of collectors out there.

This is from our latest treasure hunt! From a warehouse of cabachons and beads! All were in original packaging. All are 50 - 90 years old.
