#BEADS0151 - Irregular Shape Handmade (Lampwork) Colorful Bead - Japan
#BEADS0151 - Irregular Shape Handmade (Lampwork) Colorful Bead - Japan
Price is 40¢/bead. Vintage very colorful blue, brown, and black handmade bead. These average about 1/2" or so in diameter, but the sizes vary a little. The number of side varies too. Somewhere between eight and ten. Because they were handmade (also known as lampwork beads), no two are alike. These were still on their original strings with "Made in Japan" tags. They are unusual.

They are in unused condition, and fantastic. Bright colors. Like most of the others in this find, so far as we can tell, there are no other examples of these to be found anywhere online, or anywhere else period. They came into the store around 1967.They were sold as hippie beads in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area. In 1967, the hippie phenomena dominated the area and the demand for beads was huge. The owner of this store put out the call that he wanted all types of beads that were either colorful, large, earthenware, or had mystical significance. Some of the items that he brought into the store were much older, and we will note them in the listings. The hardcore hippies wanted glass or ceramic or earthenware, so that is what most of these items are. The lucite stuff was for the fake hippies. The demand started slacking as the hippie phenomena died down and by the mid 1970s, they started selling gold chains and disco related items instead. The hippie items were taken from the front shelves, and stored in the back. The newspaper they were wrapped in was dated 1977, so that's when they put them back there. The most striking thing in the store is an old display of huge African Trade Bead necklaces from the 1800s. They were even selling those sort of beads to the hippies. One of those necklaces will run you about 2 grand now. That place is a real time warp. You could still smell incense around some of the boxes and I kept hearing Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in my head. Just amazing.

#Cards139 - Set of 8 Exhibit Supply Male Movie Star Penny Arcade Cards
#Cards139 - Set of 8 Exhibit Supply Male Movie Star Penny Arcade Cards
You get the set of 8 cards for $8. Vintage 5 3/8" tall Exhibit Supply Penny Arcade Cards. Individual cards go for good prices on Ebay. If you split them up, you can make some money with these. Included in the set are Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, Harve Presnell, George Hamilton, Richard Burton, Robert Vaughn, Sean Connery, and Sal Mineo. The Brando and Connery cards are worth the price of the set.

We have a large lot of Exhibit Supply cards that we found in unopened bricks (you can see a picture of some of the bricks at the top of this department (Trading Card Shop). They are from a closed penny arcade. This is about the only way you would ever be able to find complete sets. The problem still is that there are more of some cards than others, so we can't assemble as many sets as you might think. These cards are uncommon. They are difficult to date because many of the machines were in production in the 1930s and 40s, but Exhibit Supply made cards for many of them all the way up to the early 1970s. The tale end stuff generally used lighter colored cardboard backing and printing on the bricks was stamped. The older ones have separate printed labels. So, we are using that info and the aging on the brick wrappers to estimate dates. These have lighter backs, but not the real light backs and are likely mid 1960s.
