#BEADS0028 - Vintage Very Large Smiley Face Bead/Decoration
Vintage very large 2 3/4" wide smiley face bead/decoration. The front is a heavy plastic and the reverse is tin. There are 5 different colors. The more you buy, the more colors you will get. The boxes they were in were marked Japan. They have two holes in the back for stringing, and a notch between them. You pulled the string or wire down in the notch to keep them from moving. They are old unsold stock from a bead store on the east coast that closed 30 some years ago. The tin on the reverse has a little tin patina which adds to their charm. The Smiley face was invented in 1964 by cartoonist Harvey Ball. Buttons and items like this because very popular during the hippie days and peaked in 1971 when over 50 million Smiley Face buttons were sold!!!!
