#BEADS0153 - Unusual Matte Finish Cigar Shaped Japanese Millefiori Bead
#BEADS0153 - Unusual Matte Finish Cigar Shaped Japanese Millefiori Bead
Price is 50¢/bead. Vintage large cigar shaped handmade bead. The lengths on these are fairly consistent at about one inch. The diameters vary more. They are all cigar shaped with a millefiori flower pattern and a matte finish to the glass. The shape and matte finish are very uncommon in millefiori glass. Because they were handmade (also known as lampwork beads), no two are alike. The "Made in Japan" stickers were still with them.

They are in unused condition, and very detailed an interesting looking. Like most of the others in this find, so far as we can tell, there are no other examples of these to be found anywhere online, or anywhere else period. They were sold as hippie beads in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area. In 1967, the hippie phenomena dominated the area and the demand for beads was huge. The owner of this store put out the call that he wanted all types of beads that were either colorful, large, earthenware, or had mystical significance. Some of the items that he brought into the store were much older, and we will note them in the listings. The hardcore hippies wanted glass or ceramic or earthenware, so that is what most of these items are. The lucite stuff was for the fake hippies. The demand started slacking as the hippie phenomena died down and by the mid 1970s, they started selling gold chains and disco related items instead. The hippie items were taken from the front shelves, and stored in the back. The newspaper they were wrapped in was dated 1977, so that's when they put them back there. The most striking thing in the store is an old display of huge African Trade Bead necklaces from the 1800s. They were even selling those sort of beads to the hippies. One of those necklaces will run you about 2 grand now. That place is a real time warp. You could still smell incense around some of the boxes and I kept hearing Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in my head. Just amazing.

##MUSICGD2052 - Grateful Dead Car Window Tour Sticker/Decal - Skull with a Peace Symbol in it
##MUSICGD2052 - Grateful Dead Car Window Tour Sticker/Decal - Skull with a Peace Symbol in it
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. Vintage 6 1/2" tall Grateful Dead sticker/decal. These are high quality art decals that were made for car windows. I peeled the cover off for the picture. They are in mint condition and can still be used. This one is from 1990 and has an artist signature Grant. It features a skull with a peace symbol in it.

These Grateful Dead stickers/decals are old tour merchandise. I found them wrapped in plastic in boxes in master cases. They came from a distributor who sold them to tour vendors. The condition is pristine and they still will work as a car decal or window/mirror sticker. We found them packed away in storage boxes dated 1992 (many are older than that) and 1995 (year Jerry Garcia died). They are high quality artist renderings of Grateful Dead themes. Back in the day, the Dead did not monitor copyrights and that sort of thing, and in fact, at one point encouraged artists to do designs. The LA times explained it well “The Grateful Dead was famously lax in enforcing it’s intellectual property rights and trademarks, allowing fans to create their own designs using the band’s expansive iconography”. Since there was no serious monitoring or much concern back then, a lot of up and coming artists got involved in designing them. This is how some of them got their starts. Some of the sticker artists who designed these stickers went on to produce official licensed works for the Grateful Dead and other famous groups. These stickers include some by now famous designers including David Opie, and others. These 1995 and older stickers are very hard to find anymore.

Vintage 3 3/4" tall Sweet Georgia Brown Liquid Face Powder label. Some gilding. Marked "copyright 1934 Valmor Products Co. Chicago, IL and probably from around that time period. This was a line of products that was made to give "black" people a "white" look. There was a short time in the 1930s when "crossing over" was popular and the Valmor line of products catered to that. That's why it pictures a light skinned black lady and says "liquid beauty pink". These came from the remains of the closed building many years ago and have become scarce.

#BEADS0844 - Strand of 48 Cherry Brand 9-10mm Transparent Amethyst Baroque Glass Beads
Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. You get 48 Beads for $3 (6¢ each). Vintage temporary strand of fancy Cherry Brand Japanese Baroque beads. They are 9-10mm diameter and are a beautiful amethyst transparent glass. The glass is very beautiful with dimples (they called it Baroque on the master case). These were made by hand using old techniques. The crude shapes and unusual dimpling really enhance the look. These are 1940s Cherry Brand (company only existed from 1946 - 1951). Cherry Brand was considered the highest quality Japanese bead maker. This is a find we made from a dealer in New York who originally purchased them in the 1940s. These are very hard to find, very nice, and have never seen the light of day. Dust them off, and they are mint. Some strands still have the Made in Japan tags.
