#BEADS0149 - Very Large Very Colorful Ceramic Handmade Splatter Glass Bead
#BEADS0149 - Very Large Very Colorful Ceramic Handmade Splatter Glass Bead
Price is 30¢/bead. Vintage very large heavy glass bead. These are over an inch and a half inch long. They are handmade splatter glass with very bright colors. Because they were handmade (also known as lampwork beads), no two are alike.

They are in unused condition, and fantastic. Bright hippie colors. So far as we can tell, there are no other examples of these to be found anywhere online, or anywhere period. They were made in India and came into the store around 1967.

They were sold as hippie beads in the late 60s from a bead store near the Haight Ashbury area. In 1967, the hippie phenomena dominated the area and the demand for beads was huge. The owner of this store put out the call that he wanted all types of beads that were either colorful, large, earthenware, or had mystical significance. Some of the items that he brought into the store were much older, and we will note them in the listings. The hardcore hippies wanted glass or ceramic or earthenware, so that is what most of these items are. The lucite stuff was for the fake hippies. The demand started slacking as the hippie phenomena died down and by the mid 1970s, they started selling gold chains and disco related items instead. The hippie items were taken from the front shelves, and stored in the back. The newspaper they were wrapped in was dated 1977, so that's when they put them back there. The most striking thing in the store is an old display of huge African Trade Bead necklaces from the 1800s. They were even selling those sort of beads to the hippies. One of those necklaces will run you about 2 grand now. That place is a real time warp. You could still smell incense around some of the boxes and I kept hearing Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in my head. Just amazing.

Click the picture to see a larger more detailed image. Vintage very large 24" wide thin cardboard display sheet. It has slots for 35 presidents, and each one is labeled with the president's name and an important fact about them. The last president that was used in the set was John F.  Kennedy, so they were made somewhere around 1964. The few of these that have turned up in the past were used and in awful condition. These are pretty near perfect and everybody that collects milk bottle caps needs one. They came from an old collection we recently purchased.

#ZLB042 - Indian Chief Stock Broom Label
Vintage 4 1/4" tall Indian Chief broom label. Nice colorful image of an Indian Chief in full headdress. These are what are called stock labels. They are labels that a printer held for broom companies to print their info on. Marked "Louis Roesch Co. San Francisco" (printer) in fine print at the bottom. Circa 1940s. These wrapped around a broom handle. Broom companies had a tough time in the 1930s and 40s when vacuum cleaners were mass produced and no longer an expensive luxury item. A lot of broom companies went out of business and the labels turn up in the old buildings occasionally. We acquired these from a long time label dealer on the west coast that we bought out. Excellent unused condition.
